//

Even if it's your first trip to Taiwan, it's impossible to miss the tea shops on every street corner.
In fact, bubble tea (also called Pearl Tea, Milk Tea, or Boba Tea) may be the island's most famous international export. We take a look at this quintessential Taiwanese drink.
-Sweet BeginningsThe mouth-pleasing concept of combining the chewy, sweet balls with drinks was conceived in Taichung during the 1980s.Before that, they were fenyuan, a popular night market dessert made with tapioca balls in a brown sugar-sweetened liquid.Two famous Taiwanese tea chains, Hanlin Tea Room and Chun Shui Tang, both claim to have been the inventors. According to Chun Shui Tang, in 1988 the store's product development manager brought fenyuan toa staff meeting and poured it into her drink on a whim. Meanwhile Hanlin claims they invented the concept in 1986 and pointed out the fact that the topioca balls are called "pearls' in Chinese is a testament to their story, as Hanlin was known for using white tapioca balls instead of the more common dark-colored ones.
